I made an over the centre locking device for the emergency canopy release, which is along the same design as the SZD55. It is very effective. The gas strut is about 10 ¼" long with a 3 ½" useful extension.

The strut is an automotive type, produces a force of 215lb
Hinge Mechanism Three
The hinge line and the point where the gas strut is attached, are connected with a couple of aluminum straps to prevent the nose cone from deforming over time, it will maintain canopy fit (remember 215lb trying to force things apart when the canopy is closed.)
