Elfe PM3

By Graham McLean

This glider was designed by Dr Pheninger who designed a series of laminar flow airfoil gliders before and after the war. His first glider weighed a mere 45 kg ( about 100lb). He immigrated to the USA after the war and worked for Northrop where I believe he was part of the U2 spy plane design team. The PM3 shown in the photos was taken by Rene Comte to the USA Nationals in 1962 and was bought by Rod Smith.

I found it in a half restored condition near to Milwaukee where I glide from when in the States. I don't have many photos of the HP18 landing gear but can get some for you. Whoever fitted it had all the HP18 drawings and has fitted it as per drawings as far as I can tell.
